How Liberty Mills Overcame Chronic Illness and an Infertility Diagnosis to Become a Successful Fertility Coach

After reversing lupus symptoms and defying an infertility diagnosis, IIN graduate Liberty Mills now empowers clients worldwide as a fertility and health coach.

Diagnosed with lupus at 30, Liberty faced chronic fatigue, migraines, anxiety, weight loss, and more. When medications offered limited relief, she learned about functional medicine and began working with a functional medicine practitioner.

“Slowly but surely, over six to nine weeks, I lowered my medication,” Liberty says. “Within about two years, I was off all medication and starting to put weight back on.”

Her recovery inspired her to help others. While volunteering at a food bank, she saw firsthand how many people struggled to meet their nutritional needs. Encouraged by her functional medicine practitioner and an integrative health coach she had met, she enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's Health Coach Training Program. “I couldn’t ignore the universe,” she says.

From Infertility Diagnosis to Pregnancy

When Liberty first enrolled at IIN, she planned to focus her coaching practice on autoimmune conditions. However, during her studies, she received an infertility diagnosis at age 43. Doctors told her that due to one empty ovary and few viable follicles, IVF was not an option, and an egg donor would be her only path forward.

She had another idea. Liberty and her partner became ‘guinea pigs,’ applying the principles she was learning about hormones and nutrition to their own lives.

“Within four months, I was pregnant,” she says. Liberty gave birth two weeks before graduating.

This personal experience shaped her career, leading Liberty to specialize in fertility coaching. She now integrates her journey with the knowledge she gained at IIN to support clients navigating similar challenges.

Building a Global Coaching Practice

Initially planning to work locally, Liberty pivoted to online coaching when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Five and a half years later, she supports clients worldwide, from Europe and the United States to India and Australia.

Her coaching philosophy emphasizes empowerment through education. Early in her career, she realized that overwhelming clients with information was counterproductive. Now, she meets clients where they are and encourages self-discovery. “You’re just their guide,” Liberty says. “I don’t prescribe. I do want to educate my clients, so I say ‘investigate this. And then make your own choice.’”

Key Tools and Practices

Liberty’s coaching philosophy combines practical tools and evidence-based strategies to empower clients on their health and fertility journeys. Here are some of the key approaches she emphasizes:

Use The Circle of Life

Liberty often uses IIN’s Circle of Life tool to help clients reflect on how various aspects of their lives, such as diet, stress, and relationships, impact their overall health and well-being.

Get Comprehensive Testing

She strongly encourages clients to start with thorough testing to identify deficiencies. “Check your vitamin D levels, get a full thyroid panel, and review your bloodwork to see where there are deficiencies first,” she says. Liberty highlights the critical role of vitamin D, noting its impact on fertility, labor outcomes, and child development.

Prioritize Sleep

Liberty’s top tip for hormone health is to prioritize quality sleep. While clients often look for quick fixes like supplements or biohacks, she stresses the importance of a solid foundation. “If you’re not prioritizing your sleep, you’re wasting your money,” she says.

Do Your Research

A common myth Liberty encounters is that alcohol doesn’t affect fertility. “Doctors tell men, ‘a few drinks won’t harm your sperm,’ but alcohol can disrupt sleep, which is going to affect the production of your sperm,” she says. Liberty encourages clients to dig deeper, often sharing peer-reviewed studies, podcasts, and other resources to support informed decision-making.

Liberty’s Upcoming Book: 360 Fertility

In 2023, Liberty’s story reached a global audience through a podcast appearance on Elle Sera, generating over 10 million Instagram views and sparking inquiries from people around the world. Inspired by this response, she began writing 360 Fertility, a 12-step guide to navigating fertility challenges. "Even if you investigate just three or four steps, it could really change a lot for you,” Liberty says.

Launching in May, the book offers practical advice for both men and women. Liberty also highlights its unique focus on supporting women freezing their eggs to optimize egg quality, a topic she feels is underrepresented in existing resources.

Preorders begin in April, with worldwide shipping available.

Studying with IIN

For those considering enrolling at IIN, Liberty’s advice is simple: “Do it,” she says. “You can study anywhere. I studied on the tube, on a bus, on a plane, and in the hospital.”

Liberty recommends that prospective students start by identifying a personal health challenge they’d like to explore. “Since completing the Health Coach Training Program, I also took the Hormone Health Course, which has been invaluable,” she says.

Male hormones, she adds, are often overlooked in discussions of infertility. “Unexplained infertility is 48 to 50% a male factor,” Liberty says. if men understood that they have hormones too—because quite often, we focus on the woman's hormones—it would be really invaluable.”

“So if I could send [the Hormone Health Course] to every single man who comes to see me, and I could say just go and do this course, it would really make a difference,” she says.

Bringing Fertility Into the Spotlight

Liberty is passionate about bringing greater awareness to fertility issues, much like menopause has gained visibility in recent years. “We have a rise in infertility around the world, and it needs a voice beyond traditional medicine,” she says.

At 50, Liberty is also navigating perimenopause and supporting others through its hormonal shifts expanding her coaching practice further to help clients at different stages of life.

“It's been brilliant. I have a 90% success rate, I help people change their lives or improve their sperm profile so they don't have to go for ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) ... But it's also enabled me as a mom to be able to work on my own terms.”
