Relationships, in addition to other areas of our lives, including our home environment, career, physical activity, and spiritual practice, are what we call primary food, or what nourishes us off our plates. Food is very important, but filling our lives with experiences, spaces, and people that bring us joy reminds us that what we eat is secondary. You can eat all the broccoli you want, but if you’re feeling unfulfilled in certain areas of your life, you still won’t reach your full health potential.
The quality of your relationships is an area of primary food many people struggle with because relationships can be complicated. We have not only romantic relationships but platonic and familial relationships that require time and energy. Research has demonstrated the many benefits that come from having healthy relationships, including feelings of belonging, adoption of healthier lifestyle habits, and even increased longevity!
