Spring is in the air, which means many of us are getting ready to pack away those chunky sweaters and make room for lightweight clothing. It’s likely that many people are also gearing up for spring-cleaning, which includes a variety of chores – from yard work and gardening to de-cluttering and organization.
As you get ready to optimize the airflow and space in your home, remember that the cleaning products you use are equally important. It’s not just about how you clean; it’s about what you use to clean, too.
Here are some spring-cleaning tips that are healthier for you and your home. Our favorite part? Most of these products are probably already in your pantry!
Baking Soda
You might already have a box of baking soda in your fridge to deodorize smells…and if so, you’re one step ahead! Baking soda is an effective multipurpose product due to its ability to neutralize acids and break through grease. From neutralizing odors on cutting boards and in dishwashers to cleaning trouble spots in kitchens and bathrooms, if there’s one natural cleaning product you want to have in your home at all times, it’s baking soda!
Lemon
A disinfectant with mild bleaching properties, lemon can be used to clean countertops, cutting boards, and copper and brass kitchenware. The fresh citrus smell is ideal for removing smells that might have built up on surfaces or cookware.
Vinegar
Although vinegar might have a potent odor, its acid possesses germ-fighting abilities that can replace certain countertop, window, and bathroom cleaners. Vinegar is especially good at preventing hard water buildup and removing dirt, residue, and mineral deposits. Just be aware that not all surfaces react well to the acidity of vinegar, including cast iron and granite.
Olive Oil
We’ve heard that olive oil is not only good to eat but also great for our skin and hair. However, the lesser-known benefits of olive oil also extend to furniture! Whether you’re looking to get that shine back on wood surfaces or remove scratches from leather furniture – adding a dab of olive oil to a cloth will help in no time!
Fresh Air!
Get rid of dust and germs by airing out your comforters, blankets, and pillows. You can opt to wash them beforehand or simply hang them outside. Fresh air and abundant sunshine will help clean these bulkier items, especially if you keep them outdoors for a full day.
DIY Recipes to Try at Home
Carpet Cleaner

Lift stains out of your carpet by combining salt and white vinegar. Lightly dab the carpet until the stains start to lift. Then let the solution dry and vacuum over it. You might have to do this more than once if the stains are really deep or dark.
Grout Cleaner
You will need:
In a large bowl or bucket, mix water, baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar. Lightly pour the mixture over your tile, tub, or shower, and scrub with a toothbrush. Soon after, the unwanted dirt and scum should start to dissolve.
Oven Scrub
You will need:
The challenge of scrubbing grease and burnt food from your oven just got easier! Using rubber gloves, combine baking soda and water, and spread the paste over the surfaces of your oven. Rub it in and let the mixture sit for 12 hours (or overnight). Spray white vinegar everywhere as you start to scrub. At the end, take a damp cloth and wipe the surface clean.
