Though summer is soon coming to an end, there’s still plenty of time to get in a last-minute vacation, explore a new city, or unwind at the beach. We all deserve a little R&R, but sometimes, it can be hard to stick to healthy habits while traveling.
Whether you’re jetting off to an exciting destination or spending a few days exploring your neighborhood, here are our favorite ways to have a Health Coach–approved vacation:
Prepare for the airport
If your travels bring you to the airport this summer, it’s great to pack healthy snacks. Opt for something easy like fresh fruit or veggies, raw nuts, and nut butter packets. If you need to grab something at the airport, convenience stores often stock bananas and apples by the registers. Plain Greek yogurt is also a good option.
Get moving
Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you need to ditch your workouts. Though you may not be able to stick to your usual routine, make an effort to move. Set yourself up for success by packing gym clothes (wearing your sneakers on the plane is a great space saver!) and booking a hotel with a gym or pool. Even if you’re not taking part in traditional workouts, stay active by exploring on foot or bike.
Eat mindfully
One of the best parts of traveling is enjoying the local cuisine. As you sample the local fare, practice eating mindfully by slowing down to appreciate your meal. Starting every morning with a healthy breakfast filled with quality protein, healthy fats, and fiber may also help curb your sweet tooth in the afternoon.
Do your research
Before your trip, research the healthy hot spots at your destination. Visit farmers’ markets for fresh produce, find restaurants with healthy, seasonal dishes, and talk to locals to find the hidden gems. If you have access to a kitchen while on vacation, pick up some local produce and cook one evening instead of eating out.
Indulge in moderation
If you choose to drink during your vacation, opt for simple drinks that use fresh ingredients and are less likely to be high in added sugars. And don’t forget to hydrate while you’re away! Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great way to make sure you get your H2O each day.
Say no to work
Put your PTO to use and actually allow yourself to unplug on vacation. Make an effort to not check your work emails or consider removing your work email from your phone while away. If you absolutely need to check in, set aside an allotted time to do so.
Most importantly, be kind to yourself on and after vacation. Don’t beat yourself up for straying from your normal habits or enjoying that second scoop of ice cream. Ease into your routine when returning from vacation, and remember that each day is a new opportunity to be your happiest, healthiest self!
