DIY Beauty Products You’ll Love

When it comes to beauty products, it can be difficult to wade through all those hard-to-pronounce ingredients to figure out what you’re actually putting on your hair and skin. Your skin is the body’s largest organ, so it should be treated with the same love and care as you put into your diet. At Integrative Nutrition, we believe in a holistic approach to life that goes beyond the food we consume. Making your own beauty products is one way to take holistic healthy living to the next level. Here are some easy DIY recipes to try:

Lotion bars
We all need extra moisturizing in the winter, and this handy lotion bar recipe from Wellness Mama can be rubbed on the skin for a hydrating layer of coconut oil; shea, cocoa or mango butter; beeswax; and vitamin E oil (optional). Not only are they made of natural ingredients, but they also look nice enough to display in your bathroom.

Hair mask
Just like our skin, hair can get dry in winter so a hydrating mask can do wonders. This one featured in Real Simple uses avocado, honey, yogurt, and almond milk or any other non-dairy milk product. For extra moisture retention, put a plastic bag over your hair and leave on for at least five minutes.

Lip balm
This lip balm recipe from Catch My Party features similar moisturizing ingredients as the lotion bars: beeswax, coconut oil, olive or vitamin E oil, and an extract such as vanilla or peppermint. All it takes is a little grated beeswax heated with coconut oil, and a teaspoon of extract mixed in.

Lavender deodorant
Those who want to steer clear of aluminum in deodorant might be interested in making their own—and adding a calming lavender scent to it. This recipe from Live Simply uses ingredients such as baking soda, essential oils, beeswax and arrowroot powder.

Lemon coconut shampoo
When you make your own shampoo, you don’t have to worry about the parabens or sulfates that are in many hair products on the market. This shampoo recipe from Essentially Eclectic only requires three ingredients for your hair to smell like dessert and feel like silk: an organic shampoo base, organic coconut oil and lemon essential oil.

Blush
It’s also hard to find makeup with natural ingredients, so this DIY blush from Thriving on Paleo will do the trick. You can create various shades by using powders including arrowroot, hibiscus, beet root, cocoa and peach.

Just like with the food you eat, it’s important to choose a beauty routine that works best for you. While not everyone might tolerate or have access to the ingredients in the above DIY products, when choosing make sure to use the most natural and high quality ones available to you.
